Today, December 21, according to the Mayan “prophecy”, is the end of the world. As the news went viral on social media, causing global hysteria, many who are declaring themselves atheists or agnostics were sharing verses from the Quran and changing their profile pictures into religious symbols. It sounds like the end of the world trend.

I had a conversation with many, and to my surprise, I was hearing words like Allah, inchallah, al hamdolilah, may Allah protect us. One was so deeply into this end of the world “nonsense thriller” that he unconsciously said he will go to pray the whole night for his last chance before he dies.

Several spiritualists across the world are convinced of a December 21 “doomsday” foretold by Mayan hieroglyphs. Some left their home migrating to a spiritual safe place; others withdraw all their money from banks and took it to a safe haven, or tried to realize their last wishes before the D day. And simply many have surprisingly become spiritualists and believers.

According to some interpretations of the Mayan calendar, the current world began 13 b’ak’tuns (5,125 years ago), following three failed worlds. And some doomsayers have equated the end of this fourth world with the end of civilization. But the consensus among modern Mayanist scholars is that the end of this 13-b’ak’tun period heralds only the beginning of the next.

Manolo, a Mayan living in NY told Morocco World News that “Dec 21 is a day to celebrate, not to mourn. It marks the end of an era and a beginning of a new one. In the bible and other religion books, it says that none knows when the end of the world will come, so I can’t understand why there is all that panic”.

Commenting on the apocalypse, Samia from Morocco also said that “this panic is useless. People should fear ignorance and status quo, instead of fearing the end of the world”.

I personally share the same opinion as Samia. If today is believed to be the end of the world, I hope that instead it will be the end of ignorant and empty spirits who spoil our thinking with stupid apocalypse theories. Today, I hope to see the end of corruption; oppression, marginalization, attacks on civil liberties, social disparities, violence and terrorism. I hope to witness a halt to IGNORANCE, humanity’s biggest enemy. Today, I hope to see the rainbow of peace and love, education, economic prosperity and social justice and development. Today I hope to see the change coming from within. So BE the CHANGE and STOP wasting our time with NONSENSE.
